We are proud to introduce you to the first and only Red Panda cub in our country. Mian, who has been adding cheer to her mother, father and her keepers from the moment she was born, has undergone a medical check-up and is in good health. Mian, which means fine cotton in Chinese, is a female red panda cub which is very delicate and full of life, honouring her name.
Our park has been working with EAZA (European Association of Zoos and Aquaria), which we are a full member of, to provide them with protection and aid in the reproduction of endangered red pandas.
Within this line, in 2014, 2 of the 3 female red pandas (Hale and Jale) that had come from Denmark’s Copenhagen Zoo and was under protection in our park were transferred to Bursa Zoo last year. Then, the only female remaining in our park Lale’s partner Robin, was transferred from the Cerza Zoo in France. The couple was introduced to each other with the permission of the Red Panda coordinator of EAZA. After our hard work, we received our gift on the 17th of June 2019, and we were united with the first red panda cub in our country, Mian. We are proud to have been able to contribute to the continuity of the endangered Red Pandas.
Mian currently lives with her mother in their winter enclosure until all her vaccinations are completed, but they will shortly start to use their garden in the coming days.
Red Pandas are endangered due to illegal hunting and the constant destruction of their natural habitats in Nepal and China. The number of red pandas have decreased by half with in the last 20 years with only 7,000 to 10,000 individuals left in the wild. The Red Panda Network, which works day and night in Nepal for the protection of the rain forests and the natural habitats of the Red Pandas, whom also establishes a large education and ranger team is supported by our park. Thanks to the contribution of our visitors, our support to the Red Panda Network continues to increase each year. As the ambassadors of their species, Lale and Robin now have a new member in their family, Mian, who will continue to meet new visitors every day in our park to create awareness by informing the struggle of existence of red pandas in the wild. Come and meet our red panda family when you visit our park! And remember; you can’t love what you don’t know and love is the first step of conservation!
